A reversing accident occurs every 1.6 minutes in this country.
In the U.S., every year, over 300,000 backing accidents are reported, and more than 400 people die because of backing accidents (most of them young children).
Nationally, at least one worker each month is backed over on construction job sites including workers, pedestrians, police officers and other municipal employees.
Fatalities will continue at this alarming rate until we can take advantage of reverse safety technology including rear day/night camera systems & obstacle detection systems.
Waste Management, BFI, Casella and many others in the waste management industry have adopted policies that include the installation of reverse safety technology due to substantial blind spots when backing.
The National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (Niosh is Osha’s sister agency) conducted field tests in Washington State (2003) and concluded construction equipment and especially dump trucks would substantially reduce the risk of backover accidents if reverse safety equipment is used. As a result of this study, Washington State now requires the use of reverse safety technology.
Backover fatality investigation reports (FACE reports) conducted by Niosh and state law enforcement personnel consistently recommends the use of reverse safety technology to reduce the risk of future accidents.
Workers become conditioned to place a very low "self alert" when hearing standard external backup alarms because they hear them all day (white noise) and usually in close proximity to trucks and other construction equipment.
Truck drivers assume they are safe to backup so long as the backup alarm is working. They know this alarm covers them with OSHA and they figure the workers will hear it and move out of the way. Time and again we are proven this does not happen and workers are struck.
In addition, workers often cannot hear these alarms due to other construction noise on job sites which often require the use of hearing protection.
The modest installation and maintenance costs of reverse safety technology  can be  paid for in the form of fewer accidents, increased safety and productivity.
Ask your Insurance Company if they will partner and share the cost to reduce accidents and risk.
